What Are The Different Types Of Broadband Available?

January 20, 2023 by Steven I. Smith Leave a Comment

Types of Broadband

There are several different types of broadband technology available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Some of the most common types include:

  1. DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)
  2. Cable
  3. Fiber-optic
  4. Satellite
  5. Cellular
  6. Fixed Wireless

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line):

DSL uses the existing telephone network to provide high-speed internet access. It is widely available, but the speeds can vary depending on the distance from the telephone exchange.

Cable:

Cable broadband uses the same infrastructure as cable TV to provide high-speed internet access. It is widely available and tends to be faster than DSL, but speeds can vary depending on the number of users in your area and the time of day.

Fiber-optic:

Fiber-optic broadband uses fiber-optic cables to deliver internet access. It is the fastest type of broadband and is less affected by distance and the number of users than DSL or cable. However, it is not as widely available as DSL or cable.

Satellite:

Satellite broadband uses a satellite dish to connect to the internet. It is available in areas where other types of broadband are not, but it can be more expensive and may have higher latency (the delay before a transfer of data begins following an instruction for its transfer)

Cellular:

Cellular broadband uses the cellular network to provide internet access. It is widely available, and it’s an alternative for areas without fixed broadband, typically this is for rural or remote areas. It’s also used for mobile internet access. However, the speeds and reliability of the service can vary depending on the location and the number of users on the network.

Fixed Wireless:

This type of broadband uses wireless technology to connect customers to the internet. The connection can be made via a network of fixed antennas, it’s commonly used in rural areas and small towns. Fixed wireless is generally faster than satellite and cellular but usually less stable than a wired connection

These are some of the most common types of broadband technology available, but others may depend on your location and service providers.

BT Mail Set Up Settings 2023

April 7, 2022 by Steven I. Smith Leave a Comment

BT Email can access online from anywhere at any time with any device. You can use it through any email program and with a smartphone or tablet, laptop. Before going to understand the BT mail set up settings, I must configure the device because for a few old versions BT mail setup could not be supported.

BT Webmail

BT Webmail or Web-based email is considered as you are looking at your email on a website with the help of any web server from any computer, laptop or device connected to the Broadband internet. For BT Mail isit www.bt.com/email

Accessing an email client

You can BT Mail set up your BT email with the help of an email client. Email Client is a program or application that runs on your computer or device, like Apple Mail, Outlook or Windows Mail.

Email client applications serve you to download your emails and store them locally on your device. This can help you to read your emails even if you are offline or disconnected to the internet.

IMAP and POP3 protocols enable you to download your email messages to your computer or device. Web Server recommends you to use IMAP with SSL, that will be enabled to ensure copies of your messages on your device, that are kept on the email server.

SMTP technology enables you to send email to any one to anywhere, either you’re using IMAP or POP3, you’ll need to enable SMTP.  It is simple and very easy  to switch on by ticking a box called ‘My server requires authentication’ in your email program’s settings.

In case you don’t set up SMTP authentication, an error 530 failure message will appear on screen while sending email messages.

bt mail set up

Set up on an email client

To set up your email on your computer, laptop or mobile device, you’ll need to know:

  • BT email address or username
  • Password
  • Device you have (Mac or Andriod)
  • Mail application you’re using (Apple Mail or Outlook for example)
  • Incoming and outgoing server settings ( IMAP/POP3 and SMTP settings) for the BT Email service

To protect our email server from abuse by spammers, BT mail require all emails sent through our email service to have SMTP authentication.

Incoming , Outgoing BT Mail Set Up Settings

IMAP settings

Incoming Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com

Port: 993 (this should be automatically populated by selecting the SSL encryption)

SSL Encryption: Enabled (but not STARTTLS)

Username: BT email address including the @btinternet or @btopenworld.com part

Password: btinternet or btopenworld password (thats was provided you on gaining broadband )

Root folder/path:

Folder separator: . (full stop)

Please do NOT enable “secure password authentication” (SPA). It’s not needed when you use SSL encryption and won’t work.

If your IMAP client supports it, we recommend you also set up the following folders:

  • Trash
  • Sent Items
  • Drafts

POP3 settings

Incoming Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com

Port: 995 (this should be automatically populated by selecting the SSL encryption)

SSL Encryption: Enabled (but not STARTTLS)

Username: BT email address including the @btinternet.com or @btopenworld.com part

Password: BT btinternet or btopenworld password

POP from folder: by default, POP will pull emails from your inbox

SMTP settings

Outgoing Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com

Port: 465 (this may not be automatically populated on selecting SSL, so you’ll need to check)

SSL Encryption: Enabled (but not STARTTLS)

Authentication: PLAIN

Username: BT email address including the @btinternet or @btopenworld.com part

Password: btinternet or btopenworld password

Help with specific email client applications

  • Apple Mail
  • Outlook
  • Thunderbird
  • Windows Live Mail
  •

The email client that comes with Windows 8 won’t work with BT Email as it only supports Microsoft’s own email addresses. These end in @outlook.com, @live.com or @hotmail.com. You’ll need to download one of the email client applications listed above. Don’t forget, you can also access your email through your web browser. Just go to www.bt.com and log in securely via the ‘Email’ link at the top.
