April 7, 2022 by Steven I. Smith Leave a Comment

BT Email can access online from anywhere at any time with any device. You can use it through any email program and with a smartphone or tablet, laptop. Before going to understand the BT mail set up settings, I must configure the device because for a few old versions BT mail setup could not be supported.

BT Webmail

BT Webmail or Web-based email is considered as you are looking at your email on a website with the help of any web server from any computer, laptop or device connected to the Broadband internet. For BT Mail isit www.bt.com/email

Accessing an email client

You can BT Mail set up your BT email with the help of an email client. Email Client is a program or application that runs on your computer or device, like Apple Mail, Outlook or Windows Mail.

Email client applications serve you to download your emails and store them locally on your device. This can help you to read your emails even if you are offline or disconnected to the internet.

IMAP and POP3 protocols enable you to download your email messages to your computer or device. Web Server recommends you to use IMAP with SSL, that will be enabled to ensure copies of your messages on your device, that are kept on the email server.

SMTP technology enables you to send email to any one to anywhere, either you’re using IMAP or POP3, you’ll need to enable SMTP.  It is simple and very easy  to switch on by ticking a box called ‘My server requires authentication’ in your email program’s settings.

In case you don’t set up SMTP authentication, an error 530 failure message will appear on screen while sending email messages.

Set up on an email client

To set up your email on your computer, laptop or mobile device, you’ll need to know:

  • BT email address or username
  • Password
  • Device you have (Mac or Andriod)
  • Mail application you’re using (Apple Mail or Outlook for example)
  • Incoming and outgoing server settings ( IMAP/POP3 and SMTP settings) for the BT Email service

To protect our email server from abuse by spammers, BT mail require all emails sent through our email service to have SMTP authentication.

If your IMAP client supports it, we recommend you also set up the following folders:

  • Trash
  • Sent Items
  • Drafts

POP3 settings

Incoming Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com

Help with specific email client applications

  • Apple Mail
  • Outlook
  • Thunderbird
  • Windows Live Mail
  •

The email client that comes with Windows 8 won’t work with BT Email as it only supports Microsoft’s own email addresses. These end in @outlook.com, @live.com or @hotmail.com. You’ll need to download one of the email client applications listed above. Don’t forget, you can also access your email through your web browser. Just go to www.bt.com and log in securely via the ‘Email’ link at the top.
